“From Wheels to Heals” Overcoming Chronic Pain Challenges
Cheerleader of HOPE, Barby Ingle goes “From Wheels to Heals” Sharing Her Story of Overcoming Chronic Pain Challenges
Phoenix, AZ – Chronic pain affects one in three Americans. Putting it in perspective, chronic pain affects more than diabetes, cancer and heart disease combined. Chronic pain is something that former cheerleader and gymnast Barby Ingle knows all too well. From the age of four, Barby had trained in dance, gymnastics, and cheering. She competed professionally from elementary-aged straight through college, going on to start her own dance and cheer program. Her reputation as a fierce competitor and choreographer led to her being offered the prestigious title of head spirit program coach at Washington State University. Sadly, in 1997 she was diagnosed with endometriosis, which resulted in a full hysterectomy and left oophorectomy and then, adding to her physical troubles she developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) in 2002. RSD is a progressive neuro-autoimmune condition that affects multiple systems in the body. If not treated early the disease can be disabling. Barby eventually lost her physical abilities and became bed-bound. The struggle to overcome the pain and live a normal life again gave her the motivation to share her story, first as an advocate and now an author.
“It was the lowest point in my life,” says Barby. “I was in terrible pain; I could no longer do what I loved. There didn’t seem to be any help for me. After three years I was finally able to get a proper diagnosis for my condition. Sadly, it still took another four years to get the right treatment. I wrote my book so that others could hear my story, know that they are not alone in their suffering, but more importantly that there is always hope.”
Today, Barby is a prominent advocate for pain management therapy and research. Never one to play it safe, Ingle has taken her motto of “go hard or go home” to the world of activism. She is currently the acting President of the International Pain Foundation (iPain), Amazon Bestselling Author, motivational speaker, and Reality TV Personality. Her latest book, From Wheels to Heals chronicles the events that led her into a wheelchair and back out again. It was written for those who experience chronic pain and unusual physical conditions who may need both encouragement and help.
“I had to become the Chief of Staff of my own medical team,” says Barby. “Physicians weren’t listening to me or if they were they didn’t believe that I was experiencing the symptoms I complained of. I refused to believe there were no answers for me, and I did not give up until I got the treatment I needed to get out of that wheelchair. With this book I want to let everyone out there who is suffering from pain or symptoms that they cannot explain that giving up is not the solution. If no one else believes them, I do. There are places they can go, resources they can tap into. That’s what From Wheels to Heals is all about.”
Her journey from despair to hope is an important one for people who are still living not only with pain but also the frustration of being told that there is no hope. She hopes that her book will inspire people to keep pushing for answers and use the resources out there like iPain to find what they need to help make themselves well.
